    ICT and Computing at King’s is seen as a vitally important area that will give students a chance to learn, understand and use the latest computer technology whilst gaining experience in applying these skills and knowledge across the whole curriculum. The students develop the ability to apply computational thinking to a wide variety of scenarios and become responsible, competent, confident and creative users of information and communication technology. To support this, King’s ICT staff have many years of industrial and commercial computing and IT experience between them which adds considerably to the value of the subject.

    At Key Stage 3:

    • Students follow our own distinct curriculum in ICT and Computing and become effective and discerning users of a variety of applications. They study programming, presentation, data handling, internet safety, website design, and the principles of software and hardware design.

    At Key Stage 4:

    • Students can choose a GCSE in Computing in order to gain a thorough understanding of computing theory, solve computing problems and learn how to write their own programs. This course has two controlled assessment projects (contributing 60% of the grade) and one examination.
    • Students can also take the Cambridge Nationals course in ICT involving extensive practical work using the latest industry standard software. This course is based on practical modules and can be worth up to two GCSEs.

    At Key Stage 5:

    Students have the choice of 2 exciting areas in which to continue their studies after GCSE:

    • A-Level ICT (Applied) – a broad-based ICT course that further develops students ICT skills across a number of practical projects. Topics include website and multimedia design through to project planning and software analysis. ICT students go to University to study courses such as Computer Science, Game Authoring, Web Design, Multimedia, Audio Engineering and Business/IT management.
    • A-Level Computing – a comprehensive computing course that teaches about computing principles, algorithms, problem solving and computer programming. Students gain a deeper understanding of hardware, software, networks, the internet, web design and related technologies, plus they design and write their own extensive programmed solution to a problem. Many computing students go to University to study Computer Science, AI, Game Authoring, Network Management, or other related disciplines.

    ICT Facilities:

    • a school wide network of modern computers with wireless networking across most of the site;
    • we have several fully equipped ICT rooms with 30 computers in each, all running the latest professional Microsoft and Adobe software;
    • a sixth-form study centre containing 50+ computers;
    • departments with their own fully-equipped ICT rooms;
    • students have their own secure logon, email account, (monitored), internet access and file storage area;
    • for multi-media work students have access to digital cameras, video cameras, desktop scanners and related equipment.
