Head of French: Mrs T Roberts

The Languages department aims to develop the four core skills necessary to language learning: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Through this process, pupils will also learn about the different cultures of the countries. It is hoped that pupils will become confident and effective users of the languages studied.

All pupils are exposed to both German and French initially. Some pupils will continue to study both languages, while others will specialise in one at the end of year 7.

At GCSE, examination will be with AQA from Summer 2018 onwards.  Both French and German are also offered at Sixth Form level.

Department staff are highly qualified and have excellent language skills. Some staff are foreign nationals, giving an international feel to the department.

The department is extremely well resourced. There are six modern and spacious classrooms for language teaching, situated in the Isaac Newton block. All classrooms have interactive whiteboards and one classroom is equipped with 18 computers. The latter enables access to IT materials accompanying courses, as well as sites to which the department subscribes.

In French, the Studio course is used at Key Stage 3, along with other resources.  From Year 10 onwards, the Studio GCSE course is used for preparation for the new GCSE exam specification.  For French, unit summaries – giving the defined content for each unit of work – are available to pupils on R drive ‘Languages’, as are the other materials used in Years 8 - 11.  In the German department, Stimmt and Logo are the course books used at Key Stage 3 with the new Stimmt course designed for the new AQA specification in Years 10 and 11.  At Sixth Form level, materials used originate from a variety of sources for both French and German, with the course being based on the Oxford University Press course designed for the new A Level specification.

The department currently organises a number of trips abroad. These include a Key Stage 3 trip to Rouen, Le Havre and Caen.  In 2017, Sixth Formers also participated in this trip with a customised programme.  The staff contact for future trips is Mrs T Roberts.  The German department currently runs a Year 7 trip to northern Germany (staff contact Mr B Finke), an exchange trip to Bamberg and a Sixth Form trip to Berlin (staff contact for these trips Mr O Acs).
