    Terms 1-2

    Induction

    Students learn about what science is, what scientists do and the skills needed to be a good scientist.

    Living systems

    Students learn about:

    Living processes, cells in plants and animals, unicellular organisms and the role of skeleton and muscles.

    The particulate nature of matter

    Students learn about:

    How all matter is made of particles, states of matter, solutions and several techniques for separating mixtures

    Forces and motion

    Students learn about:

    How to describe the motion of objects using calculations and graphs, what a force is, different types of force and their effects on objects

    Terms 3-4

    Diet and health

    Students learn about:

    Nutrients, food groups and a balanced diet, the human digestive system, diseases caused by not having a balanced diet and the use and misuse of drugs.

    Atoms, elements and compounds

    Students learn about:

    Atoms, elements and the Periodic Table, combining elements to form compounds, naming compounds and chemical formulae.

    Energy

    Students learn about:

    Types of energy, energy transfers, conservation of energy, energy resources used to generate electricity, using electricity in the UK and worldwide.

    Terms 5-6

    Genetics and evolution

    Students learn about:

    Variation between organisms, genetics and inheritances, DNA, adaptations of animals and plants, natural selection, selective breeding, and biodiversity.

    Chemical reactions

    Students learn about:

    Metals and non-metals and their oxides, reactivity series and displacement reactions, exothermic and endothermic reactions, combustion, decomposition and reduction.

    Electricity and electromagnetism

    Students learn about:

    Static electricity, circuits, current and potential difference, resistance, magnets, the Earth’s magnetic fields and electromagnets.
