Year 7 Science Curriculum

Key topics to be taught this year:

Terms 1-2

Induction/Enquiry Processes

Students learn about what science is, what scientists do and the skills needed to be a good scientist.

Organisms

Students learn about:

Living processes, cells in plants and animals, unicellular organisms and the role of skeleton and muscles.

The particulate nature of matter

Students learn about:

How all matter is made of particles, states of matter, solutions and several techniques for separating mixtures

Forces

Students learn about:

How to describe the motion of objects using calculations and graphs, what a force is, different types of force and their effects on objects

Terms 3-4

Ecosystems

Students learn about:

Describing the factors and components of an ecosystem, feeding relationships with food chains and webs, pyramids of number and biomass, fieldwork and environmental problems.

Chemical reactions

Students learn about:

Acids and alkalis, metals and non-metals and their oxides, reactivity series, displacement reactions and making salts.

Electricity & Energy

Students learn about:

Types of energy, energy transfers, conservation of energy, electrical circuits, using electricity, efficiency.

Terms 5-6

Genes

Students learn about:

Inherited variations and environmental variation, adolescence, human reproduction.

Earth structure and the Universe

Students learn about:

Earth’s layered structure, rock types, the solar system, phases of the moon.

Waves

Students learn about:

Transmission of light and sound, wave features, reflection, refraction, the ear, the eye.
