Year 8 Science Curriculum

Key topics to be taught this year:

BIOLOGY

CHEMISTRY

PHYSICS

Terms 1-2

Photosynthesis and respiration

Students learn about:

Photosynthesis, the structure of a plant, fertilisers, aerobic and anaerobic respiration, the human respiratory and circulatory systems.

Acids and alkalis

Students learn about:

Everyday acids and alkalis, indicators, the pH scale, neutralisation reactions involving metals, hydroxides and carbonates.

Levers, pressure and moments

Students learn about:

Levers as simple machines, moments of forces, the principle of moments, pressure in gases and liquids.

Terms 3-4

Reproduction and growth

Students learn about:

Sexual and asexual reproduction, pollination and plant reproduction, the human reproductive systems, fertilisation, adolescence and pregnancy.

Materials and everyday chemistry

Students learn about:

Chemistry of respiration and photosynthesis, polymers, ceramics, composite materials, hydrocarbons, medicines and cooking food.

Waves

Students learn about:

Wave properties, behaviour of light and sound (speeds, reflection and refraction), the ear and hearing, the eye and sight.

Terms 5-6

Ecosystems

Students learn about:

Describing the factors and components of an ecosystem, feeding relationships with food chains and webs, pyramids of number and biomass, fieldwork and environmental problems.

The Earth and atmosphere

Students learn about:

The structure of the Earth, formation of sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic rocks, weathering and erosion, biofuels and the effect of carbon dioxide levels on the atmosphere.

Space

Students learn about:

The structure of our Solar System and its place within the Universe, using models to explain day and night, seasons, phases of the Moon and eclipses.

Science investigations

Students will carry out a range of scientific investigations and present their findings to their class.
